DivX 7 makes special sneak preview appearance!

BarCampSD opening

BarCampSD 4, one of those “unconferences” sweeping the globe these days, saw a rare surfacing of the long-awaited next version of DivX software that includes support for the H.264 video codec, the .mkv container format and AAC audio.  With long-time DivX evangelist Alastair “digital56k” Mayo, we gave a couple of presentations on the new features in DivX 7 as well as a detailed (or as detailed as one can be in 25 minutes) demonstration of DivX H.264 encoding in action. Al showed how to use DivX 7 in conjunction with popular encoding tools to compress high-quality HD video into much more manageable sizes, without sacrificing visual quality.  Step-by-step Al worked through AVISynth, VirtualDub, MKVToolnix, Haali Media Splitter, DivX H.264 Decoder beta 3, and Media Player Classic.  You can try it for yourself here. (Of course you probably don't get to do it on a Nehalem test bed like Al does!).

DivX 7 Playback Preview

Our third Project Rémoulade release is a preview of the new playback components from the upcoming DivX 7 bundle. Building upon past releases, DivX Player 7.0 Beta 1 now features support for MKV files containing high definition H.264 video and surround sound AAC audio! The preview also includes components that extend support for the MKV container and H.264 video to most Windows media players.

x264 Team crash the DivX Halloween party!

Today we held the DivX Halloween party, a much anticipated annual event where the food and beer flows freely and our teams wardrobe looks slightly less out of place than it does the other 364 days of the year. Amidst the chaos of roaming children, pets, and the costume competition we ran into an unexpected visitor downstairs at reception..

The second package to be released from Project Rémoulade is an alpha version of the DivX H.264 Encoder. Complementing the DivX H.264 Decoder, this multithreaded encoder produces high definition H.264 video bitstreams that are compatible with the draft profile for DivX 7 H.264 HD video. The encoder is a command line utility and accepts input from raw AVI files as well as the AVISynth frameserver.
